Why you keep hitting the Claude Code usage limit (and what to change)

Token Coach ·

Short answer: Subscription limits are counted in rolling five-hour windows. One heavy burst, usually a long thread on a strong model, can use a window that your average day never comes close to.

The limit is about bursts, not averages

On subscription plans, Claude Code usage is counted in rolling five-hour windows. You can be well under your plan on a normal day and still hit the wall at 4 pm, because one session did most of the work in a short burst.

What fills a window fastest

Get more done before the limit

  1. Hand off and /clear when a piece of work is finished.
  2. Use a lighter model for routine edits.
  3. Send wide searches and log reading to a subagent.
  4. Check /usage to see where you stand in the current window.

Is your plan the right size?

If you hit the limit every day, you may need a bigger plan. If you never come close, you may be paying for headroom you do not use. Either way the answer depends on your busiest window, not your monthly total.

How CTO helps

CTO watches your sessions locally, flags the habits that fill your window, warns before the context window fills, and its plan check compares your busiest five-hour window with what you pay, including telling you when to pay less.

Questions

How long is the Claude Code usage window?

Subscription usage is counted in rolling five-hour windows.

Will a bigger plan fix it?

Sometimes. Check whether your limit hits come from one habit, such as very long threads, before paying for more.
